Currency Exchange in Vietnam – Our Experience
When we traveled to Vietnam in December, we carried Indian Rupees (INR) and US Dollars (USD) with us. Since we had already booked most of our rides and tickets from India, we only needed cash for food, shopping, and small expenses. Finding the best currency exchange in Vietnam was crucial for getting a good rate.
Where to Exchange Currency in Vietnam?
Our journey started from Ahmedabad, and when we landed in Da Nang, our first task was to exchange some money. After asking at the information counter, we found out that there was a currency exchange office inside the airport. We went there and exchanged $100, and in return, we got approximately 2.4 million VND (24 lakh VND).
For reference, here’s the approximate exchange rate we experienced:
1 USD ≈ 24,000 – 25,500 VND (Varied by location)
1 INR ≈ 290 – 300 VND
If you are carrying Indian Rupees, converting them directly to VND may not give you the best rate. Exchanging INR to USD first and then converting USD to VND is often more beneficial.
Understanding Vietnamese Dong Notes
Vietnamese currency can be a bit confusing for first-time travelers due to its high denominations. The banknotes start from 1,000 VND and go up to 500,000 VND. Here are some common denominations you’ll come across:
1,000 VND
2,000 VND
5,000 VND
10,000 VND
20,000 VND
50,000 VND
100,000 VND
200,000 VND
500,000 VND
Since the numbers are big, it takes time to get used to the currency. Always double-check before making payments, as 20,000 VND and 200,000 VND look quite similar!
Best Places for Currency Exchange in Vietnam
We exchanged money at different places, and the rates varied:
Jewelry Shops in Da Nang: Best rate! We exchanged $1000 and got 25 million VND.
Hotels in Sapa: The rate was lower; we got 2.45 million VND for $100.
Travel Agency & Exchange Offices in Hanoi: The best rate here was 2.55 million VND for $100.
Cost of Essentials in Vietnam
Vietnam might seem cheap because of its high currency values, but in reality, prices are quite reasonable. Here’s what we found:
Water bottle: ~10,000 VND
Toilet usage (WC): 2,000 – 6,000 VND
Meal for two people: 500,000 – 600,000 VND (~$20-25)
While INR might feel like a big amount when converted to VND, the cost of living makes USD a better choice for exchange.
Final Tips for Currency Exchange in Vietnam
Exchange small amounts at the airport – just enough for immediate expenses.
Use USD for a better exchange rate rather than INR.
Check with jewelry shops or local exchange offices for the best rates instead of hotels or airports.
Always count your money before leaving the exchange counter.
Keep smaller bills handy for taxis, street food, and small purchases.
Finding the best currency exchange in Vietnam can help you save money and get the most value out of your trip. Just be mindful of where you exchange your money, and you’ll get the best rates possible!
